Entertaining, Engaging and Inspiring

I was sitting in my boss’s office about to be on-boarded from my first remote leadership role. It was the early 90s and the office decor of dusty greens and even dustier salmons (is that what pink was called back then?) was all the rage. In preparing me for this remote role in which I would be home-based, he made this comment, “You won’t hear from me unless something goes wrong”. He was an old school leader, and genuinely believed that he was giving me an affirming message - that he trusted me to get on with the job and if I didn’t hear from him, I was to take it that he was pleased with the way things were going. That style of leadership wasn’t effective then and it isn’t effective now. Fast forward to 2020, and that style of remote leadership won’t be effective with the general populace, let alone with millennial’s who will become the majority of our workforce within the next seven years.

During the Covid-19 lockdown I got a call from a client that, if I am to be honest, surprised me. They are a substantial business with a lot of office-based staff spread throughout New Zealand, and having seen my videos on “how to stay motivated at home” they were calling to ask me to produce two video series - one for remote workers, and the other for people leading remote teams. As a business they were really impressed with the remote working experience that had been forced upon them through the Covid-19 lockdown. They were seeing great productivity gains from staff despite the presence of young children in some homes, and many of their employees had indicated a strong desire to continue to work remotely at least some of the time in the future. If you’re listening to this video it’s quite likely that you are a business who is strongly considering or has already embarked on the remote working journey as the new normal for you and your staff. However, like my client, you’re aware that we are early on in this journey and in order to adequately support your remote working team, you are looking for resources to achieve this.
